My Story – Yep It’s My First Post

Do I really think I’m a Master of Marketing? And what’s with this “I have the power” stuff?

Well hopefully, some people are getting the references to He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. When Prince Adam transforms into He-Man, he says: “By the power of Grayskull … I have the power”

So do I think I’m like He-Man or something? No. First I’m just having some fun, and I think Masters of the Marketing sounds better than anything else I could think of.

But it’s also a mindset thing for me.

I’m NOT just trying to sell some crap. I’m working to become a master (like a skilled craftsperson, or artist) at marketing.

It’s an art, and it’s a skill that can be learned. And when done well it can help people. That’s a power I’d like.

And it’s a power I want to help pass on to others.

So, you and I can both say: “I have the power”.

I’m genuinely trying to be of help to others in what I’m doing.

But, let’s be honest. We both know I wouldn’t be doing this if I wasn’t trying to get something out of it myself – so what’s my angle?

I own my own traditional “brick and mortar” business. And it’s going well. But I’m tied down to my location, and I can’t serve my customers unless I show up and work with them face-to-face.

I don’t want to be tied down like that.

So a few years ago I started a marketing/consulting business on the side. Something I could do from anywhere, working with clients around the world. I like marketing – I like graphic design, writing, video, photography, being creative, solving problems. I like helping people find the value their business can give to others and helping them communicate that value.

I want to work with good people and help good people grow successful businesses.

Now it’s not that I thought this new venture would be easy, but it’s been more difficult than I thought. The pandemic didn’t help.

As I was trying to build my business, learning the skills I needed myself, I discovered affiliate marketing. I thought this would be a relatively easy way to supplement my income as I built my own products and client base.

I had come across a high-ticket affiliate marketing program that sounded so easy. Just direct some Facebook traffic to a “proven” funnel. They take care of the sales, the delivery, the customer service. How hard could this be?

It was a lot harder, and more expensive than I expected. And I nearly gave up on affiliate marketing when Facebook shut down my account. I’d spent thousands, with 0 returns. Why keep trying?

Why didn’t I give up? Well, I wasn’t going to give up on my larger goal of starting a business that I could do anywhere in the world. And I didn’t give up on affiliate marketing because I found someone who helped me understand the mistakes I had made and got me on the path to success.

I still believe in affiliate marketing because I know it is a legitimate way many people make a living, and because it will teach me everything I need to know about online marketing – which I can then use to market any product.

You learn these skills, and master these skills and you can do anything in business.

What I’ve learned in the last couple years is that I needed to work at affiliate marketing, the same way I worked at building my first business.

It’s work. And I need to seek out advice and guidance from people who can help me, AND follow through on what they tell me.

This is NOT a get-rich scheme. This means there isn’t just one guru out there with the magic formula, or the magic product, and if I just find them I’ll strike gold.

It’s about finding someone trustworthy, who can teach me the skills I need to learn – it’s up to me to stick to the task.

This blog is one of the things my mentor has told me I should do. I’d prefer not to do it. But I’m going to listen to someone who knows what they’re doing, and I’m going to stick to it.

  1. I can see by reading this post, you do have the power! It will certainly pay off if you stick at it with that passion that you show.

There will always be those programs we spend thousands of dollars on with no return…drop shipping, Amazon, eBay and even as you mention – that high-ticket affiliate marketing that puts a bad taste in our mouths.

But what a relief when we land on a real deal that has true support; the trustworthiness of a mentor; and a program to follow where we are held accountable to follow the plan.

I’ll be watching to see your tips in breaking free of being tied down to a brick and mortar business. It’s something we all want – freedom to work where we want and to live life to the fullest…By The Power of Grayskull!
