Time for my Monthly Goal Review so I stay on track with my goals – and don’t go months without doing anything …
Last Month’s Goals:
- Post 3 videos a week directed at artists
- 1,000 followers on TikTok
- Don’t worry about going viral, just focus on getting 1K views per video consistently
- Get 10,000 views on a video
- Take my TikTok videos and start posting them on Instagram and Facebook to start building a following on those platforms as well
- Post 1 video a week directed at people interested in affiliate marketing (on my separate account with that focus), Not worrying about views or followers, but just to build consistency there
- Review goals in 1 month
Results:
- I didn’t do this for a variety of reasons (I only posted 6) – the main reason is I’ve been working on a short film, which I shot this last month (but I’ll talk about this more in the “what I learned” section)
- 42 followers (+3)
- Hitting the dreaded 200 on average
- 630 was my best this last month
- Continued posting on other accounts – but just like TikTok it’s slow
- Did not do this
- Keeping it up.
What I learned:
My approach towards my short-form videos was misdirected. I need to remember that for me these short-form videos are marketing, they are not first and foremost my art (though I will use my creative and artistic skills to make them) their purpose is not to express myself, they are to promote myself. I want to build a following so that I can promote my movies, my writing, and to promote products that help me. But none of my videos need to actually be about that to accomplish that.
I have learned that the product I want to promote does not need to be synonymous with the content I create for these short-form videos. For some people, it could be. But if the product is not something that is easily relatable or broadly engaging, then it will be very difficult to make videos that get views – and without views the platform won’t share my content, and I won’t get followers, and I won’t be able to promote anything.
The Nutter Butter account probably illustrates this better than just about anything
There’s no point in making a bunch of videos that won’t get views – so there’s no reason just to post in order to post. There will always be a need to test concepts, and test formats to find something that works. But if I’ve already figured out a concept and/or format isn’t working for me, there’s no reason to keep making those videos.
What I’ve been doing so far isn’t getting me anywhere. So I’m taking a step back from what I’ve done so far, and I’m going to work on finding a concept and format that converts to views. So I’m not just going to keep making videos that aren’t going anywhere, I’m going to do some research and rethinking, and planning, and work on finding something that works for me.
Oh yeah, and as I mentioned I was making a short film. That’s what is really important to me, so I don’t feel bad focusing on that which meant not worrying so much about TikTok for the moment.
Most people talk about how important it is to post consistently. But that doesn’t mean you have to post every day, or even every week. It means posting consistently good videos. And by good I mean, in relation to short-form videos, effective videos that accomplish what I want them to accomplish. So I’m going to take the time to figure out what is more effective before I waste some good behind the scenes material from the making of my short film on videos that only 200 people will watch.
New Goals:
- Post 3 videos a week testing different concepts and formats till I find one that works
- 1,000 followers on TikTok
- Don’t worry about going viral, just focus on getting 1K views per video consistently
- Get 10,000 views on a video
- Continue to post on Instagram and Facebook
- Review goals in 1 month
And I’ll close this post with an important question that I’ve been thinking about. “Why do you want to be seen?”
